About nine million Shia pilgrims have visited the shrine city of Karbala for Arbaeen, the 40th and final day of mourning for Imam Hussein.
"The number of people who visited Karbala has touched nine million," Major General Raed Shakir Jawdat told AFP.
Akhil al-Khazali, the governor of Karbala, said it was a "record" turnout.
Around 50,000 Iraqi policemen and soldiers have been deployed in and around Karbala to thwart any possible insurgent attacks during the ceremony.
"The security plan put in place has worked the way we expected," said Jawdat.
Imam Hossein, the son of the first Shia Imam Ali (AS) and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), is revered as the third Imam by Shia Muslims.
He fought against cruelty, corruption and injustice and was martyred in the course of his heroic struggle on orders from the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid, in 680 CE.
