5. Muharram

This is the first day of the Islamic new year, however instead of parties and celebration it is marked by sorrow and reflection. For many it is the beginning of a period of fasting and austerity.
The first ten day of Muharrem are remembered for the tragedy of Karbala ending with the martyrdom of Hz. Hussein the grandson of the Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him and his family) and his household, friends and retainers on the tenth day called Ashura, (the tenth in Arabic).
While something that happened almost 1400 years ago might seem to have little relevance in our day and age, there is a saying among the people who love and respect the Ehli beyt ( the household of the Prophet(pbuh&hf) ) that goes “Everyday is Ashura, everyplace is Karbala”. I will explain.
What Hz. Hussein and those who followed him did was refuse to bow to oppression, to fight for the spiritual independence of the people. They took a stand against the corruption of values, a stand for humanity against the political takeover of a few greedy men who wanted to control everything and everyone. In effect the origins of the stand of the 99% against the 1%. What is going on in the world today is no different to what happened then. Wall Street is Karbala, London is Karbala, New Orleans is Karbala, Afghanistan is Karbala, Burma is Karbala, Tibet is Karbala. The list is long, too long. Everyplace that humanity is oppressed, where the basic rights of people are denied or repressed that place is Karbala. And every time someone takes a stand against that oppression, that time is Ashura.
Though the sands of Karbal were stained with the blood of that most Holy Rebel and his followers on that sorrowful day the 10th of October 680 AD (10 Muharrem 61Hijri) the heroic stand of 78 souls against 30,000, a battle that was fought with swords, spears and arrows, a battle that lasted from sunrise to mid-afternoon, a battle fought by 78 men who had been deprived of water for days, was not a defeat but rather a victory of valor and virtue over corruption and greed. It provided a tremendous burst of judicial energy that we are all still tapping regardless of our religions or ideologies. For truly justice is the foundation of freedom.

Geehrte Leser,

die nächsten 10 Tage (bzw. bis zu 40 Tagen) stellen für die Bektaschiten Trauertage dar. Der Grund dafür ist das Martyrium in Kerbala des Enkelkind des Gottgesandten Muhammed [Friede sei auf Ihm und seiner Familie] namens Huseyin bin 'Ali.

Viel historisches möchten wir zu Kerbela vorerst noch nicht sagen, da der Gemütszustand etwas anderes sagt.

Anfänglich möchten wir nur zwei auf unsere vorigen Postings verweisen. Zum einen werden die täglichen Anrufungen und Erwähnungen (ezkâr), und zum anderen einen Film über die Karawane Huseyins.
